Seorang nenek berusia 66 tahun harus menempuh perjalanan sejauh empat kilometer setiap hari untuk mengantar cucunya yang cacat di atas bahunya ke sekolah di kota Yibin, Provinsi Szechuan, China. Melewati jalanan pegunungan dan sungai, mereka tak pernah terlambat sampai ke sekolah.
Fang Qiu Mei (14) lahir dengan kaki yang tidak normal. Fang hanya mampu berdiri selama beberapa menit dengan bantuan kruk. Ketika dia baru berusia dua tahun, ayahnya meninggalkan rumah dan ibunya menikah lagi. Fang diserahkan kepada kakek neneknya untuk dirawat. Namun, kakeknya yang sudah tua menjadi sakit-sakitan, hanya neneknya satu-satunya tumpuan mereka.
Agar tidak terlambat sekolah, nenek biasanya bangun pukul 05.00 dan mempersiapkan semuanya. Mereka meninggalkan rumah tepat pukul 07.00 dan selalu tiba sebelum pukul 08.30. Namun bukan tanpa perjuangan. Mereka harus menempuh perjalanan 2 kilometer yang tidak rata selama satu setengah jam. Neneknya harus memikul Fang yang beratnya hampir 40 kg, belum termasuk berat tas gadis itu sehingga mereka harus beristirahat setidaknya lima kali selama perjalanan.
Hal ini sudah dilakukan sang nenek selama lima tahun terakhir, pulang pergi sejauh 4 kilometer. Kebesaran cintanya pada sang cuculah yang membuatnya begitu. Dia merasa kuatir dengan masa depan Fang. Nenek bahkan mengaku sering terbangun di tengah malam karena mimpi buruk yang sama berkali-kali. Nenek bermimpi cucunya tergelincir dalam sebuah genangan air berlumpur dalam perjalanan ke sekolah tapi ketika dia mencoba menarik cucunya, Fang tidak dapat meraih tangannya.
Untuk membayar perjuangan neneknya, Fang berjanji untuk belajar lebih keras. Setelah kisah mereka dipublikasikan ke media, pemerintah setempat memindahkan keluarga tersebut ke sebuah rumah yang berada dekat sekolah Fang. Fang diberikan sebuah kursi roda dan diberikan perawatan medis untuk melihat apakah dia bisa berjalan.
